Philippine Zip Code Trivia

You zip code is not just a boring four-digit number. The Philippine Postal Corporation or PhlPost uses them to make delivering your items to your doorstep in a more efficient and organized manner. All cities and Manila and major towns in provinces may have on or more, and even some schools and organizations have them too to due the high volume of mails they receive.

Other than that, here are the other notable facts about our Zip Code. Enjoy!

  1. ZIP stands for "Zone Improvement Plan"
Introduced by the United States Postal Service in 1963. The concept is that this makes mail travels more efficiently and quickly "zipping along" going to the appropriate bucket.

  2. It was initially a shorter code
In 1940s, the earliest known code close to the current zip codes were just two digits, and the US only applied this to numerous large cities. By the early 1960s, the true Zip Code was designed to cover all states and cities. Today, they use 5-digit codes, while the Philippines only use 4.

  3. The Manila Central Post Office owns the "1000" Zip Code
Our post office may be the ones that delivers our mail, but it has it's own zip code too!

  4. Some of our top universities have their own Zip Codes
DLSU Taft has 0922, UP in QC has 1101, UPLB has 4031 , CLSU has 3120, and ADMU has 0917. Some colleges that has zip codes too are College of Los Baños (4031) and Philippine Union College (0901).

  5. Provinces are issued with just a single code
Except for the following provinces: Dasmariñas has 4114, 4115, and 4126, Los Baños with 4030 and 4031.

  6. ZIP code should be placed on the left-hand side of the last line of the address
The correct placement of Zip codes when writing an address is on the left side of the last line, which is usually the City or Town/Province.
